Orlando Otey gave his first concert at the age of 5 at the Teatro Iris in his native Mexico City.

Over the next several years he toured Mexico, Spain, France and England. By the age of 17 he became the youngest faculty member at his alma mater, the National School of Music of the University of Mexico, teaching piano, music theory and Solfege.

Orlando Otey came to the United States in 1945 to continue piano and composition studies at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA. In 1949 he was one of three pianists to represent the U.S. at the Chopin Centennial Celebration Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland.
Dr. Otey is known for the "Otey Music Theory System", which is based on Nine Music Patterns. This lifelong project depicts his discovery of the Musical Key and Key Formula, Extension Staffs, and other innovative concepts in Tonality, Modality and piano techniques.
